Coral reefs are among the most vital ecosystems on Earth, often referred to as the “rainforests of the sea.” They cover just 1% of the ocean floor, yet they support around 25% of all marine life, providing essential shelter, food, and breeding grounds for thousands of species. Based in Atabae, this community-led initiative is restoring coral life by growing coral fragments in underwater “nursery tables”, a proven method for reef regeneration. Each nursery becomes a living classroom for coral education and a thriving micro-ecosystem that attracts fish and marine life back to damaged areas.
But it’s not just about the environment. This program is also empowering the Atabae community by creating local jobs in conservation, eco-tourism, guiding, and sustainable hospitality. For the first time, young Timorese in this region can earn a living by protecting the ocean, instead of exploiting it.
