"Experience the beauty, empower the community, and protect the environment."

TimorGetaway is Timor-Leste’s first locally owned, women-led digital tourism platform. We connect international travellers with authentic community-based experiences, and we connect rural providers, most of them women-led, to a global market they could not reach on their own.

The problem we solve

Timor-Leste has world-class reefs, living culture and untouched coastline. Until recently it had no digital pathway connecting any of it to an international traveller.

For travellers. There was no centralised platform for authentic bookings, no verified listings or reviews, no way to plan a multi-day experience, and most operators accepted cash only.

For communities. Rural women rich in skill, culture and hospitality remained invisible in the digital economy. Global booking platforms overlook frontier markets, and local operators rarely list community guesthouses or village experiences.

While travellers struggle to access the country, local communities struggle to access opportunity. This is not only a tourism gap. It is a gender and economic exclusion gap, and TimorGetaway is the only platform in Timor-Leste addressing both sides of it at once.

How the model works

We do not simply list businesses. Our team operates the entire booking pipeline on the provider’s behalf, so a woman with no website, limited internet or digital literacy can still be found, trusted and paid.

  1. Discover: Travellers find community-owned experiences that were previously invisible online.
  2. Trust: Verified listings, ratings, reviews and safety assurances supply the confidence that individual providers cannot generate alone.
  3. Book: We manage availability, pricing, enquiries and confirmation for the provider.
  4. Pay: Secure payment by bank transfer, mobile wallet and P24 replaces cash-only transactions, and booking revenue is transferred directly into provider accounts.
  5. Sustain: Revenue stays in the community, and conservation and cultural preservation are built into the product rather than added on.

Providers join at zero upfront cost, with no website, subscription or listing fee required, and they keep ownership of their own pricing and product. We earn a commission only when a booking is confirmed, so we succeed when they do.

Our story

TimorGetaway was born out of a shared love for travel and a deep desire to make Timor-Leste’s beauty accessible to the world. Founded by Flora Brytes and Delivio Soares, a husband-and-wife team of explorers, innovators, and dreamers, the idea emerged not from a business plan, but from countless journeys they took together, each one filled with discovery and inspiration.

Every time they travelled abroad, things were simple. With a single search online, they could find destinations, book experiences, and learn about local cultures. But whenever they returned home to Timor-Leste, they saw a different reality. Despite the country’s stunning beaches, mountains, and traditions, there was no digital platform that helped visitors explore its uniqueness, or that connected travellers directly to local hosts and communities.

Their vision took shape during a visit to Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, where they witnessed how tourism could empower everyday people. Local families earned a living through small boats, guiding visitors through breathtaking landscapes while preserving their culture and environment. Flora and Delivio were deeply inspired: what if Timor-Leste could do the same, and build a tourism model where locals lead, benefit, and protect what makes this nation special?

In 2024, the ASEAN Blue Innovation Challenge, funded by the People of Japan and implemented by UNDP Indonesia, opened its call for groundbreaking ideas. Flora and Delivio submitted their proposal through their own Timorese technology company, Prospares WebTech, which built the platform: a digital tourism platform designed to promote Timor-Leste’s authentic beauty, empower local communities, and champion environmental conservation.

From over 1,341 proposals across Southeast Asia and Timor-Leste, TimorGetaway was selected as one of only 60 winners. The team launched its pilot in Com, Lautem Municipality, training community members in hospitality, business and financial management, culinary arts, barista skills, creative crafts, and access to financial services. These efforts enabled local entrepreneurs to become hosts, guides, and storytellers of their own communities.

When the project concluded, Flora and Delivio knew this was just the beginning. To ensure long-term sustainability, they registered TimorGetaway as an independent, women-led Timorese company in 2025, with Flora as Founder and CEO and Delivio as Co-Founder and CTO, turning an award-winning pilot into a growing national platform.

Today, TimorGetaway stands as a proudly Timorese-born innovation, a bridge between culture and technology, tradition and transformation. At its heart lies a simple mission: Experience the Beauty. Empower the Community. Protect the Environment.

This journey would not have been possible without the dedication of our core team, Joctan Lopes, Octavio de Araujo, Guida Freitas, and Roberto Martins, whose creativity, commitment, and passion helped shape TimorGetaway from an idea into a movement.

Together, we are redefining tourism in Timor-Leste: one journey, one host, one story, and one product at a time. Through close collaboration with local providers in every municipality, TimorGetaway co-creates curated travel experiences that celebrate the distinct beauty, craftsmanship, and identity of each region, ensuring that every getaway tells a story worth remembering.

Needs Assessment in Com by the Prospares WebTech Team on December 7, 2024.

Proof: The Com pilot

Before building nationally, we built locally. Every step of the Com pilot became the blueprint for how we open a new destination.

In December 2024 we began with community consultations, tourism asset mapping and provider baseline surveys. In February 2025, working with the East Timor Development Agency (ETDA) and Banco Nacional de Comercio de Timor-Leste (BNCTL), we delivered a five-day intensive training for 30 community-based tourism providers, the majority women-led: guesthouse and homestay operators, cultural artisans, boat owners and conservationists.

The programme covered business management, hospitality, financial literacy, digital marketing, eco-tourism and marine conservation, with hands-on workshops in arts and crafts, barista skills, and responsible waste management. BNCTL introduced digital banking solutions, helping business owners move from cash-based transactions to secure digital payments.

Several participants opened their first bank account that week, which is what now allows booking revenue to reach them directly.

Improvements were immediate. Guesthouses adopted better hygiene practices and strengthened their cultural offerings. Sina Guesthouse integrated a Tais-weaving session into its packages, giving visitors an authentic local experience while supporting artisans.

Participants then co-designed their own travel packages, combining adventure, cultural immersion and eco-tourism. The platform went live in March 2025, and the first international bookings were confirmed within days.

“This training provides a great opportunity for our community. If we apply these skills, we can improve our services, increase our income, and help boost Com’s local economy.”
