Chasing Giants: Fishing Adventure in Betano, Manufahi (South Coast)

Last Saturday, 27th September 2025, I embarked on one of the most thrilling fishing adventures of my life along the South Coast of Timor-Leste in Betano, Manufahi. Accompanying me were my friends, Rio and Lilo, and together we brought an impressive arsenal of fishing tackle—rods and reels ready for anything the sea might throw at us. From the Daido Oceanic 2.4m paired with the Iroly Strada 6000 reel to the Elito Killer Whale 1.8m with Next Blaster 6000, each combo was chosen carefully, promising both power and precision.

We met our guide, Mr. Mario, a local boat owner whose experience of over 20 years immediately put us at ease. By 10:00 pm, we set off under the starry sky, heading toward the rich fishing grounds between Ainaro and Suai seas. The air was thick with anticipation, the waves rising and crashing like challenges waiting to be conquered.

The night quickly turned into an adrenaline rush. Rods bent, reels screamed, and one by one, we landed our trophies: two Big eye Trevally, two enormous Red Snapper, and a massive Snapper—all between 5 and 10kg. As the giants took center stage, smaller Indian Mackerel fish glimmered in the glow of our metal jigs, adding to the thrill of the catch.

Fishing here is no walk in the park. The South Coast is notorious for its strong currents, high waves, and even crocodiles lurking nearby. But with Mr. Mario’s expert guidance, we navigated the waters safely, discovering a region bursting with untapped potential. The only thing holding back many local fishermen is access to larger, safer boats—they risk it all in small vessels, a testament to their courage and resilience.

By sunrise, after 12 hours on the water, we returned with not just fish, but stories, laughter, and memories of a night where adventure met the raw beauty of Timor-Leste’s southern seas. Betano is more than just a fishing spot—it’s a playground for those daring enough to chase giants and experience the thrill of the deep.
